Microdermabrasion

Periodic exfoliation of the superficial-most layers of the skin helps to improve the skin texture, sheen and appearance. The thinner, refreshed epidermis allows for better penetration of skin care products applied to the skin surface afterwards (See Skin care). The technique is useful in rejuvenation of changes produced by photoaging (sun damage) and weathering of the skin due to the aging process.

In contrast to dermabrasion, microdermabrasion is a non-surgical technique in which small, fine sand crystals are sprayed against the skin in order to painlessly remove the very superficial layer. There is no recovery with this technique, and the skin feels softer and silkier immediately after the treatment. To achieve maximum results with microdermabrasion, the patient needs to undergo a series of several treatments spaced about two to three weeks apart.

On-going skin care program is essential for the best results because the skin care products enhance the results of microdermabrasion, and the technique improves the penetration of the skin care products. Sunscreens are needed to protect the fresh, new skin for at least three months following a series of microdermabrasions.
